8 Great Things To Do in Markham in April

It’s spring time! Time to get outside and do something interesting, fun and exciting. One of the biggest reasons that Markham is a great place to live is the great variety of public attractions and events we enjoy each year. There’s always something new to see and do.

Without further ado, here is a cross-section of just some of the events that you can enjoy this April in Markham:

Snow – Until April 24 at The Markham Museum

No, this doesn’t mean that the Markham Museum will be blanketed in the white stuff for the entire month. But, just in case you didn’t get enough of the real thing this winter, “Snow” is a travelling exhibition, created by the Canadian Museum of History in partnership with the J. Armand Bombardier Museum that presents the cultural history of snow in Canada, from Aboriginal Peoples, to the first European settlers and right up to today.

What is Markham? Discover Our Evolving Community – Throughout April at The Markham Museum

Whether you’ve lived here all your life or you’ve just moved into the city, this event is a great way to get a better appreciation of our history and why Markham is such a great place to call home. Organized by the Museum itself, the exhibit looks at our history over the past 100 years, including aerial photographs, virtual tours and a place for you to record your own memories.

Men of the Deeps – 50th Anniversary Tour – April 7 at Flato Markham Theatre, 171 Town Centre Blvd.

When was the last time you took in a performance by a choir of real coal miners? Here’s your chance. Canada’s legendary Men of the Deeps, a choral ensemble made up entirely of Cape Breton coal miners, returns to the GTA for a performance of ballads, spirituals and folk songs that celebrate and pay homage to the communities and folklore of Cape Breton.

Olympic-Qualifying Table Tennis – April 8, 9 and 10, at the Markham Pan Am Centre, 16 Main Street, Unionville

In case you missed the table tennis competitions during last year’s Pan Am Games, here’s yet another chance to see world-class players competing for a spot in the Rio Olympic games.

Wu Man & the Shanghai Quartet – April 9 at Flato Markham Theatre, 171 Town Centre Blvd.

Called “A Night in Ancient and New China”, this is a multimedia production that features famous scores from Chinese cinema, and a suite of Chinese folk songs. The artists combine traditional sounds of China with the musical stylings of a European-style string quartet.

Amazing Race Markham – April 9 starting at the Markham Civic Centre

If you’re a fan of the popular TV show, this is your chance to see for yourself just how tough, or not, it is to compete in an Amazing-style race. Teams of 2 will compete against each other by trying to complete a wide variety of challenges that test you memory, speed and teamwork. Best of all, entrants must raise at least $75 for the Ontario Mental Health Foundation (OMHF) before they can compete. The more money you raise, the more advantages your team will enjoy during the Race. Good luck!

B-Strong Walk – April 24, starting at the Markham Museum

This is a great opportunity to get out for a walk in the spring while supporting a worthy cause. The B-Strong Walk is held annually to support Brain Tumour Research. In 2011, the then Town of Markham declared April 22nd as “B-Strong Day” following the passing of Lindsay Bolger in 2009. The Town wanted to commemorate Lindsay’s courageous efforts to raise awareness and funds to help those who, like Lindsay, are afflicted by brain tumours.

Andreas Varady – April 29 at at Flato Markham Theatre, 171 Town Centre Blvd.

Jazz aficionados will recognize the name of this 17 year-old prodigy who was introduced by none other than the legendary Quincey Jones at the famous Montreux Jazz Festival – when Andreas was just 14 years old! Now at the ripe old age of 17, Andreas continues to amaze the jazz world, long the domain of grizzled veterans, with his incredible talent, honed on the streets of his native Ireland.

Even though this winter was not as bad as the last two, spring always seems like it’s a long time coming. Whatever you do this spring, we hope you get out and enjoy this great city that we call home.
